The Midbrain

The midbrain, which is a small but crucial area near the base of the brain and is derived from the embryonic mesencephalon, is a crucial hub connecting the two other main brain areas, the forebrain and the hindbrain.

The brainstem, which serves as the main nerve connecting the brain to the spinal cord, is topped by the midbrain. The tegmentum, cerebral peduncles, and colliculi are the three primary components of the midbrain. The oculomotor and trochlear nerves, which are in charge of controlling eye and eyelid movement, are two of the twelve cranial nerves that originate in the midbrain.

The stimulation of a hormonal outflow is necessary to awaken the MidBrain (Interbrain). The pituitary gland is responsible for controlling hormone secretions in the human body; this gland has to be stimulated. To do this, the nearby Pineal Gland must be activated. Melatonin and serotonin are the two hormones secreted by the pineal body. Melatonin secretion rises during the dark and falls during the light. Serotonin has the ability to boost right brain intelligence and is thought to have a tight relationship with the evolution of species. As the MidBrain facilitates communication between the left and right hemispheres of the brain, improving communication between them is a consequence of activating the MidBrain.

What is a neuron?

The basic building blocks of the brain and nervous system are neurons, also known as neurones or nerve cells. Neurons are the cells that receive sensory information from the outside world, give motor commands to our muscles, and convert and relay electrical signals at each stage along the way. Their encounters, more than anything else, shape who we are as individuals. Nevertheless, there is interaction between our about 100 billion neurons and other cell types that are often referred to as glia (these may actually exceed neurons, but it's not truly known).

What does a neuron look like?

Comparing a neuron to a tree is a helpful analogy. Dendrites, axons, and the cell body, or soma (see illustration below), which are comparable to the branches, roots, and trunk of a tree, are the three primary components of a neuron. A neuron gets input from other cells along its dendrite, or tree branch. Like tree branches, dendrites branch as they approach their terminals, and they even have spines—leaf-like projections—on them.
